Established in 1930 as the First State Watch Factory under Stalin’s Five-Year Plan, the factory rose quickly, producing its first pocket watches that same year. It was renamed in 1935 to honour Sergei Kirov and played a crucial role during WWII, supplying wrist- and deck-watches to Soviet forces.
Though the Sturmanskie was worn by Yuri Gagarin in 1961 (the first watch in space), the Poljot brand (“flight” in Russian) was officially introduced in 1964 and became the flagship of Soviet watchmaking.
Following the USSR's dissolution, Poljot faced challenges. Former employees formed Volmax (reviving brands like Sturmanskie, Buran, and Aviator), while MakTime continued movement production—but the original Poljot brand eventually ceased as a watchmaker.
